SOMA HELLINON PROSKOPON - Scouts of Greece

SOMA HELLINON PROSKOPON  Scouts of Greece (SHP) was introduced in 1910 by Athanasios Lefkaditis.  The movement is running uninterruptedly for one century, officially, or unofficially during the Metaxas’ dictatorship and WW II  (German occupation) (1939-1944).

The Scouts of Greece were present at the side of the society at all the difficult moments, either wars or physical disasters, helping people in need. That is why the Greek Scout Flag has been decorated with a lot of military and other medals.

The Organization is a founder member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Greek Scouts have participated in all the World Jamborees and other world events. Soma Hellinon Proskopon has hosted the 13th World Jamboree on 1963, 19th World Scout Conference in Rhodes Island on 1963 and the 36th World Scout Conference in Thessaloniki on 2002.

There are 25.000 members, boys and girls, making Soma Hellinon Proskopon the largest and oldest youth organization in Greece. The Organization’s relations with the authorities have always been exceptional with its work recognised and honored on numerous occasions. SHP aim at providing an educational proposal to the young people of Greece – boys and girls – through a system of progressive self-education, the Scout Method, based on a value system.

Greek Scout Groups can be found all over the country at about 500 points, as well as in Greek Communities abroad. Children and youngsters 7-18 years old experience Scouting in Cub Packs (7-11 y.o.), Scout Troops (11-14 y.o.), Venture Scout Units (15-18 y.o.) and Scout Networks (19-30 y.o.).

Volunteer trained Leaders offer the adventures of the Youth Programme, encouraging personal initiative and active participation of all members in the decision making of their units.

Scouts of Greece supports BP fellowship, European Scout Foundation, DESMOS, Kandersteng International Scout Centers and various other Initiatives.
